Suburban horror: Teen Travis Gallo charged in sister’s death, stabbed 17 times

Travis and sister Teia Gallo were two of 12 kids in the large family of Robert Gallo and his wife, a gynecologist with a practice in Hackensack, N.J. — nine were biological and three were adopted, according to his website.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A teenager accused of stabbing his 20-year-old sister to death with a kitchen knife during an argument at their home in an affluent suburb was charged with murder on Friday.

Seventeen-year-old Travis Gallo stabbed Teia Gallo multiple times Thursday evening in Washington Township, just northwest of upper Manhattan, Bergen County prosecutor John Molinelli said.

Travis Gallo appeared at a closed hearing in juvenile court in Hackensack and had a not guilty plea entered by a public defender. The prosecutor’s office told Woodland Park’s The Record newspaper that it will decide within the next month whether to have Gallo tried as an adult.

Officials said Gallo and his sister are among 12 children in the family and another sibling was home at the time and called 911. Dad Robert Gallo, a gynecologist with a practice in Hackensack, on his website describes himself and his wife as having nine biological children and three adopted children.

A police car stood outside the family’s spacious, two-story house at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac Friday as neighbors expressed shock at the news. One neighbor described the family as friendly and characterized Travis Gallo as a “normal kid,” though quiet.
