Sacred Heart Church was standing-room only Saturday as nearly a thousand friends and family members mourned the loss of John and Maria Granat.

The Palos Township couple were killed Sept. 11 in their home, and their son John has been charged with their murder. But on Saturday, the tearful crowd came together to try and fill the emptiness they felt.

Many people cried throughout the Mass, which was celebrated almost entirely in Polish. The Rev. Grzegorz Wojcik was the celebrant, and Sacred Heart Pastor Patrick Tucker also spoke briefly following the homily.

“I couldn’t help thinking as their bodies are there together, they entered eternity together,” Tucker said. “Perhaps it speaks to us that would have been what they liked: to remain together.”

Interment followed the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.

Four, including a teen driver, are to be charged with the crime.
