Iowa’s juvenile lifers
The following is a list of people in Iowa prisons serving life sentences for murders they committed when they were juveniles.
One person is serving a life sentence for a kidnapping committed as a juvenile. The list is provided by the Iowa Department of Corrections.
July 16, 2012 The Governor of Iowa commuted all these offenders to a life WITH parole sentence to avoid further challenges based on the US Supreme Court decision in Miller v Alabama. But their first chance at parole is not until after they have served 60 years – they will all be 76 or 77 years old before they have a chance to be released.
The Governor did this after consultation with victims and attorneys. NOVJL applauds his helpful decision that will save victims families much agony and the taxpayers of Iowa much expense, hassle and ultimately endangerment from killers being released too early.
